Debunking the Myth

THE BUNK BEDS WHERE CATHOLIC GUILT AND NEO-LIBERAL ECONOMIC ASSUMPTIONS ARE SNORING

I'm concerned with the lingering effects of the moral notion of guilt in Flanders (maybe coming from Western Europe). What are the after-effects of the endeavours of the boomer-generation to escape the grasp of Catholicism that was still very much present in social life during the 60's and 70's? Is it possible this struggle led to some form of transgenerational trauma? Is this a socially shared concern or just a personal case, dealing with the relationship between me and my father? Which lines can be drawn between this moral view of guilt (that we supposedly have left behind) and the economic view on debt of neo-liberalism that is now determining the conditions we live/sleep under?

I would say catholicism has affected me as well, although I don't know if it did in the same way-I can relate to my father as someone that I loved and I still love without knowing how. And maybe catholic GOD is playing me good. I think it is a matter of concern I was not aware last week. How is my relation with men affecting my artistic, spiritual, affective and theoretical practice? Is this challenging me in some way?

AM I SUPPOSE TO ENCARNATE A ROLE THAT HAS HURT ME IN ORDER TO BE MORE THAN WHAT I ALREADY AM BECAUSE OF MY DESIRE OF SURVIVE AND BE PART? Belonging should not hurt, right?

My matter of concern is what are the sites of instituting (new) forms of sensing that I can influence or have an effect on. The sites are numerous and different in how they shape senses; I'm thinking from pop-culture, to wellness-industry, the arts in general, dance pedagogy, cultural, social arenas and practices that have an elaborate, whether more or less explicit idea of the body and the “training, constructing” of it.

I guess there's a hidden matter of concern - the “real” effects of my work, of one's work, material effects perhaps. That would further point at the desire to grasp the causality at best, but let's go for relation between immaterial and material. Material in this case is bodily experience, patterns of sensing and acting upon them. How can we speculate the future from our senses differently than under the dominance of visual perception?

IT HOME

Many years ago, I had a conversation about how love is a plural being. Some of its limbs and organs can be named with words of friendship, family, romance, Walt Disney, or the terrifying feeling of falling and being devoured by one of its bodily openings. What does it mean to see this body of love not as a natural beast, but as a cyborg?

NON-DUAL (IN) DIFFERENCE

To practice a non-dual stance for me is a pragmatic way out of the truth-game of critical exchange. Not so much to replace it, as to offer a wider ground of agonism on which we can still recognize the common ground beneath our concerns as speaking partners. To embrace the non-dual out of its spiritual context, however, often meets with the resistance of this being an escapist way out of the real, situated here and now. How to engage from a non-dual ground into situated practices and pay respect to what is? How not to seem in-different: not respecting identitary, economic, historical and other differences? > is making visible the seams that weave together the indifferent patches of fabric enough? No one is with meROMANTIC DEATFSDFADSFSDFASDTGSLDHF KLKHJFLK JADFLGKNKA.SJZFNGK. COOPERATIVE

I'm thinking about changing the way the workplace that has been established as a curated project, into a cooperative. My research about commons has brought me to a splace where I'd like to start an experiment with this workspace/gallery. I'm interested in sharing with persons that want to share the responsibilities, risks and benefits. At this moment I'm thinking about a modus operandi that can be summed up in:

- a person that needs to rent a space, can do so through my Smartbe.be activity. In that sense I can invoice the organisation/person and with that budget create artistic employment for myself and participants when doing artistic work. This means in practice that most persons that I know, are not able to provide for such a space, because to arrive at a minimum 35,23 euro netto salary that only covers the costs and rent of the space, an invoice of 84,18* euro inclusive 21% administration costs has to be made per day for using such a space. (source)

- connecting with a decentralised autonomous organisation. Organising the space through ethereum based Smart contracts and interacting with the Motion token developed by Marlon Barrios Solano from dance-tech.net. This would in practice mean that the gallery space develops a contract that can be exchanged. A clear convention regarding liabilities and regulations regarding the rental contract and utility bills, and all other terms and conditions related to access, use and care of the space and its communal areas, need to be included in the protocol of providing a non-curated, non-commercial, non-institutional, common workspace for artistic research and presentation on a distributed ledger through an ethereum based smart contract.

When possible, starting a public foundation, which functions as the intergenerational safeguard of its common property and is defined constitutionally to interact with society for the benefit of artists and artistic work. The identity of the artist can be thought of as the M+ concept of subjectivity (Zizek et al.).

Thinking about these possibilities of allowing spaces to exist in between the institutional and the market oriented, has often brought me to a dependency on both welfare/funding and selling of time/labour. My main concern is related to other forms of exploitation/exchange of value, which benefit both from market and state interaction, to gather resources for artists to have abundant time and necessary means to develop research and practice which does not have to be profit driven, neither contribute to propagate society at large. At the same time to refrain from withdrawing from the world into niche communities, precarity cults and religious interpretations of contemporary cultures - rather belonging to the world into a different paradigm, a practice of im/possibility with a commitment that extends beyond: academic reflection, a side gig besides real work, an addon to a curriculum vitae that scores well, etc. Instead engaging in an artistic practice wherein the ecology-economy and the personal liability is at stake, where things do matter for real and money needs to be available in exchange for time and resources on the short and the long run, changing the position from where artistic practice reflects on society. Not how to, but why put your money where your mouth is?

HOW TO DIE IN A GOOD WAY? (HOW TO LIVE IN A GOOD WAY)

It seems that, if driven to its radical potential, non-duality could have the ability to make one rather fearless? I say that, because inside of non dual is of course non attachment, and a person without attachments is one who has nothing to fear, in a sense they are already dead, fully alive, however we might see it.To me there exists something juicy here, that is how to die in a good way? I'm curious somehow of how the context of artistic research can be a container to explore death within, or if it can be a place to do this in? I see many valuable offerings it could have-once dead , it's possible to talk to ghosts, why talk to ghosts? Because maybe they have something to say.-given that the planet is going through the 6th extinction perhaps research is needed on what it is to die, what it is like to die, and how to do so in a good way? There are many people who've done this research before of course, during the aids crisis, during the many apocalypse that different sects of humans have undergone. Perhaps this tactic or technology of non-dualism can be a mode of this research. But once within the non-dual frame , when there is not a specific correct answer to be found or even rubric to formulate off of, how to be able to know, what you are doing(what the aim is when the technology at use is radical acceptance?) … Listen to homebound closing time with Stephen Jenkinson-once dead, there is an embedded “freedom”(connectedness) , the choice to do, to choose, what moves (you)through you, perhaps. If i'm thinking of an artist as a muse, a vessel, a portal, a potential for a device for divine, whether the divine is foucault or the divine feminine (perhaps they one and the same anyhow), then within death is perhaps located the ability to fully commit, to be fully present. I also feel here a connection to the latour text, as he spoke about types of critique- people projecting fake meaning into what they are doing, people being simply vessels to be moved by a larger force unbeknownst to them. In death there could exist a third option, although i'm unsure of how it could be called. A dance between it all stories being fake and then allowing the fakeness to guide real material actions that we both could predict the consequences of and also not.

SORRY FOR RAMBLING

One of my favorite James Baldwin quotes “..because only an artist can tell, and only artists have told since we have heard of man, what it is like for anyone who gets to this planet to survive it. What it is like to die, or to have somebody die; what it is like to be glad. Hymns don't do this, churches really cannot do it. The trouble is that although the artist can do it, the price that he has to pay himself and that you, the audience, must also pay, is a willingness to give up everything, to realize that although you spent twenty-seven years acquiring this house, this furniture, this position, although you spent forty years raising this child, these children, nothing, none of it belongs to you. You can only have it by letting it go. You can only take if you are prepared to give, and giving is not an investment. It is not a day at the bargain counter. It is a total risk of everything, of you and who you think you are, who you think you'd like to be, where you think you'd like to go — everything, and this forever, forever.” (short version)

ALIENATION FROM SELF?, HERITAGE, BELONGING AND CONNECTION

I am concerned with the harnesses I and others built to make life under current systems livable. And how - after some time - these harnesses don't easily get acknowledged by people wearing them and become some kind of second patch-worked skin of stimulus that guides us.I'm thinking of my grandfather who's dying and my father who can't talk about it. ⇒ protecting from hurt, emotional concern I'm thinking about the huge amount of pesticides my grandfather and many other farmers have been exposed to and him not considering to stop using it. ⇒ protecting a family, ecological and health concernIn my research I'm thinking of ritualistic places where harnesses can be revealed or put aside by some sort of witchcraft. What do these places look like and how do they function? Are they safe, or is it important that they are unsafe? In which different way can this witchcraft work, other than shaming and blaming like catholicism did? Witchcraft is becoming a harness too. “Safe” sounds like a category of predictability - can we assure that nothing we don't want to be accountable for will happen? Are all these, harness (I assume criticality and discourse is meant by it), witchcraft, catholicism devices for preserving an imagined order or are they, can they be in function of catalysing a change of the order?

Where does one encounter contemporary space-times of liminality?

When we go underground? Or maybe at the crossroads. When I dance. In the airport. On a long bus ride. At 4 am.

What is the harness of witchcraft? What does a space goblin, a zombie and a vampire have in common? Think of the goblin guarding the inside, afraid of losing the preciousness of an inner world. The zombie cares more for the beverage than the person on the date. The vampire shrivels at the thought of a regular day job, and above all craves for love to replenish the hole where once was its unbroken heart. They don't exist in a scientific worldview. They belong to an imagined order, which nonetheless functions similar to a scientific worldview. In the Roman empire the children were considered the property of the parents. Can I desire beyond the dual drive for being a protector of the child or of freeing a wild being appealing to a greater being to guide its unruliness? The voice in the back of the head --- (where my demon appeared to be situated) mine too...in the right ear more or less actuallyIn my practice I have the tendency to follow a certain direction, path, themes and way of working for an extended period of time and when I think I know this direction and feel like I might identify myself too much with the work or others identify me with it too much, I pull the break in order to forcefully pull myself out of a workflow to become aware of my way of working. This very much has to do with a voice in the back of my head which is critical towards choices I make and I wonder if this voice in the back of my head is not overdetermined with “political correctness” and norms that the cultural field inherently and sometimes silently puts over work. So I seem to pull a break to free myself from choices I made myself and lead others maybe astray? But the braking is a violent act leaving me practice-less for a period of time and kind of in limbo. Which is something not necessarily negative for an artist but does not feel comfortable either. So how can you free work from critique either a projected one or from oneself, without being uncritical toward work and oneself?

What happens along the way - Where do you end up when you continue moving in said direction, even after realising it is 'the wrong way'?

How do you perceive the surroundings along the route then? - Will you start moving differently, without having changed your 'way'?

Is this possible without fear/danger?...no lo dejes apagar.

INTIMATE VERSUS PERSONAL

There is something impossible in this confrontation. The two terms point at completely different regimes to inhabit the very moment of decision taking. Playing the game of etymology goes very revealing. “Personal” comes from the persona as the actor's mask character in a play. A person can only show in a theater. A referential frame that keeps us oriented by a specific value system. A regime of representation. A regime of anticipation (debt) If, by the other side, we look at “intimate”, we can see the “in-” doesn't work as the opposite of out (in-and-out), but as “inter”: what is in between, among, if we don't want to reduce the complexity of this “in-”. When the noun becomes a verb, ….when we intimate, when we share intimacy with, we're sharing the in between, sharing an affect, we are among. Is there Oxana's soul as a passage? A short of catch me if you can. You will never take me on stage. A regime of immanence. A regime of spontaneity. How do the two regimes deal with each other? What's the cat-and mouse play? Not enough is enough. Fuego! ….no lo dejes apagar. source

'My concern is that I am becoming reactionary - the values of my upbringing and education, that I believe I have already distilled and weeded out, are under threat. Just when you feel you're starting to comprehend the world, it changes. The frameworks through which I partake and receive the world are diluting, transforming. I am appalled by finding out that I'm often driven by resentment towards newer generations that “have it easier”. I've let myself be convinced that taking on certain struggles is necessary or even the most human experience, completing, enriching the spirit. So easy and so many reasons to become bitter. How to support and contribute to the betterment of the future if my values are greatly differing from the current ones, that have the momentum and are gaining podium. How important is it to be on the “right side of the history”? How (far) can I sacrifice the sense of safety for a necessary, but not necessarily better change, a new paradigm is promising and disrupting the status quo with? Some concerns are not concerns anymore, but are unresolved emotional conflicts that solidified into an opinion without any umbilical cord to the alive matter of the concern.“I simply want to do what every good military officer, at regular periods, would do: retest the linkages between the new threats he or she has to face and the equipment and training he or she should have in order to meet them—and, if necessary, to revise from scratch the whole paraphernalia. This does not mean for us any more than it does for the officer that we were wrong, but simply that history changes quickly and that there is no greater intellectual crime than to address with the equipment of an older period the challenges of the present one.…My argument is that a certain form of critical spirit has sent us down the wrong path, encouraging us to fight the wrong enemies and, worst of all, to be considered as friends by the wrong sort of allies because of a little mistake in the definition of its main target. The question was never to getaway from facts but closer to them, not fighting empiricism but, on the con-trary, renewing empiricism.” (Latour, Critical inquiry) The desire to desire. After I got excited, frustrated, satisfied, happy, and bored by the phenomenal sensory stimulation within the empty house. Maybe ingesting something: sugar, salt, smoke, tea, coffee, nicotine, pleasure, rest, etc. Why can't I do without? And why do I attach to the pleasure of doing without? I met my soulmate at the drive in of a fast food chain restaurant, because we got into an argument about which dressing was the most tasty to dip the stir fried onion rings, or were it octopus rings? Too hard to think beyond a lifetime. What's love got to do with it? Could I read Meeting the universe halfway quantum physics and the entanglement of matter and meaning while reading The ticklish subject - the absent core of political ontology and rethink the theses of these works within the work of Byron Katie? My mind jumps into culture vulture's lyrics 'adhd, the disease of the century that's me'. My concern is that academic rigour is lost among the lifestyle of smartphone updates, that the time it takes to bring a thorough work into existence, doesn't fit the scattered and fleeting subject matters of seasonal academic fashions. Never mind reading Merleau Ponty during the first confinement wave or bother with Agamben's emergency state's law enforcement. How to belong to Harari's useless class and work on practices that present themselves useless to the surveillance state, yet can proliferate within it and render the importance of hegemony to the relative dustbins of history?
