“Assuming negativity” is an experiment that aims to question the possibility of the subject/artist provoking a glimpse of their own negativity through a state of increasingly manipulated positivization and objectification. Inspired by Byung-Chul Hun’s book “The Agony of Eros” and his criticism on the neo-liberal contemporary society where he argues beyond the Hegelian dialectic of Master and Slave he draws the contemporary subject as a unit that embodies both. He suggests that in opposition of the fetishized narcissistic expression the courage to accept self-negation for the sake of discovering the Other is to reclaim a definition of love that combines the artistic, the existential and the political. Attempting to experience what Hun’s envisions as breaking the Inferno of the Same and the eternal display of the auto-exploited through transgression and transcendence as an embodied practice possibly suggests the invention as much as the destruction of ritual forms. Assuming negativity is made by Marivi Gazeta through a collaboration with Stef Meul.

On October 7th 2021, Rez Gauche will host *a reading group* in a new hybrid online/in-person format.

*a reading group* is a self-sustained, collectively run and porous educational structure. The participants feed the group and the group feeds the participants.

Initially gathering online, *a reading group* formed of already familiar faces, new invitees and tangential relations has been meeting weekly since April 2020 for critical discourse against the backdrop of the unfolding global pandemic. With a flexible communal structural that supports the shifting attendance of individual participants, the active and intentional concern for the nuances of how to study together has remained a defining element of the group. As the year and the pandemic progressed, so too did the need to come together and engage in critically rigorous and precise shared study.

During the group’s meetings the prepared texts and literature are discussed alongside conversation about the lives, feelings and structural conditions of the participants as we feel our way through a present humming with urgencies. Viewed in retrospect, the group’s reading list represents the wake of our shared desires, interests and commitments, influenced by the shifting political tides in and of the own lives of those present.

As a permeable collective body, *a reading group* believes in openness and shared sense of responsibility. In times of a global pandemic, it has not only become relevant to sustain critical structures in other ways and intensities, it is even more pertinent to—within the given situations—find moments for collective exchange, acts of care, pleasure and a sense of proximity and kinship.

reading group

rez gauche presents this small solo show of sculptures and one video by Zachary Schoenhut with performances by Anastasia Mccammon and Francesca Hawker for the opening night.

This series of works examines the desire and need to fill an absence. Working with clothing charged with memories of abjection, Zachary created a series of sculptures by reformulating their negativity through a process of disintegration, reforming, and coating in the hopes to both change and honor the void of the well.

The video work, "i want to drool on you" looks into the impossibilities of intimacies and considers audio-visual work as a form of contagion, smearing the ears and eyes with the goo of another.
